It was way back in the early 1980’s that VBS made its entry into our church. With dedicated and enterprising pastors like Rev. S.M. Aralikatti, Mr William Carey who first introduced it in our church, it began in a humble way with around just 60-70 children. The VBS ministry was welcomed by the congregation with open arms. So inspired were they that they came forward to encourage it financially and with complete involvement.
The children too were enthralled by this ten day course with general assembly, interesting lessons, meaningful action songs its question-answer time and inspection day, day of labour , feast day that they got completely involved in it. There were times when children wondered why VBS could not continue for more days. One could very clearly notice the sea change in the child’s attitude after the completion of VBS. They learnt to pray, read the Bible daily and memorise verses. Though the financial restraint was felt, VBS always remained vital and vibrant. There were times when children went to nearby villages to distribute tracts as a part of the VBS activities.
Since then, VBS has come a long way. VBS in our church has maintained its vibrancy. In fact, the church as a whole is much involved in VBS and its activities. It is no more a ministry for children. Many older members contribute their services very enthusiastically.
Today, VBS has become an integral part of our church activities. VBS is an expensive venture. But the generous contribution from the members of the
congregation is a huge financial relief. On a average, more than 250 children ranging from Nursery to tenth attend the VBS. Of them, more than 20-25% of children are non-Christians. Thus VBS has been a very fine medium of evangelism among children.
May the VBS ministry in the church grow and reach out to more children, and may it harvest more souls for His kingdom. For the Bible says… “From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise” Psalm 8:2
